This qualification reflects the role of educators in early childhood education and care who work in regulated children’s education and care services in Australia. They support children’s wellbeing, and development in the context of an approved learning framework. Educators use a range of well-developed skills and knowledge using discretion and judgment when carrying out their work in the context of established policies and procedures. They may work independently or under the guidance of others, though in some contexts that guidance may not be on-site.

Early childhood educators work in long day care centres, family day care, pre-schools or kindergartens.

This qualification is made up of 17 units (15 core & 2 elective) which reflect the needs of industry

Entry requirements

  • Valid USI
  • Working with Children Card
  • Completed LLN Assessment
  • Access to a registered child care service to complete the minimum required 160 hours (can be employment, work placement or volunteer)

Duration & Delivery

The guideline for duration is 6 months – 2 years however, training is self-paced, and duration depends on the individual learner, their employment situation and enrolment type. Credit transfer and RPL options may also reduce the overall time taken to complete the course.

This qualification can be provided through a Traineeship or in a Fee For Service arrangement. Students may also be eligible for RPL entry.

Training is delivered on site at a nominated registered child care service. Site visits are conducted monthly and can also be scheduled more frequently to suit the needs of the learner.

First Aid

The core first aid unit "HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an education and care setting" will be awarded via credit transfer once a current Statement of Attainment has been presented and validated.
